Effective management is an acquired skill, whether you are managing your household, finances, clients, subordinate employees, projects or data. The necessity to manage more than one of these is present in the lives of most adults, finances being a key one and a project may be as simple as booking your next holiday. People naturally want to make their lives easier by utilising whichever tools are available.

Money has got to be the bane of most people’s existence; we never have enough and are always struggling to balance the books, as it were. Online banking enables people to manage their finances with considerable ease, not to mention the array of budget management tools available online. There are support forums, blogs, financial advisors, call centres, I could go on! Rather than struggling on your own you should utilise the money management support systems which are available to you.

Managing data can be a nightmare, if you do not have the correct tools, software and support. Have you tried to generate sales from cold calls working off a spreadsheet? It is not easy to keep track of who has called whom and when. An even worse situation can arise when you invest in data management software and then it corrupts or crashes. Once management systems and software are in place people naturally rely on them, the excess available time is utilised in other ways. If that system crashes or is corrupted it can cause chaos and is the last thing any business wants after having made the investment into the system. This is why the support for your data management system is vital.

When you think about project management you probably think about construction work or IT system development, however managing projects are part of your day-to-day life. There are the key project management methodologies to help manage projects in the workplace and big personal events such as your wedding day. These management tools can also support you in your everyday life, particularly if you are on a tight budget. They force you to consider all the elements so you remember to take into consideration costs such as travel, food, drinks as well as the actual activity for the day/evening.

Managing people is, I imagine, the most difficult management skill to perfect, whether they are your children, your employees or someone else’s children. When human personalities are involved management support can be quite limited. The only way to effectively manage people is to know them, understand their stresses and ambitions and communicate with them, in person, on a regular basis. There are nevertheless, a huge selection of books, websites and forums with advice and guidance on how to deal with specific situations and personalities which can support your management responsibilities.
