The Value of a Computer Tune Up

Computers have become so commonplace that it is easy for some people to confuse their computer system with household electrical appliances such as a television or refrigerator. When viewed as an appliance a computer may seem like a device that will last for many years with little maintenance required. This perspective can lead some people to ignore the value of a computer tune up.

It would be wise to think twice. With its collection of hard disk drives, CD & DVD drives, fans, microprocessors, memory, electronics and frequently changing data your computer is actually more like your car and much less like a standard household appliance. Regardless of whether it is a desktop or a laptop your computer has moving parts and data that changes on a daily basis. Like your car, your computer doesn’t run well without regular tune ups.

To put this in perspective think about What would happen to your automobile if you drove it for two or three years without a tune up and changing the oil or checking the tires or adding fluid to the cooling system? Most cars and computers are durable and can deliver years of good, reliable service. They also need periodic maintenance.

A computer is a dynamic system. The data changes frequently as documents, email messages and attachments, contacts and addresses, photos, and numerous others sources of data are created and deleted. Programs are installed or uninstalled. Microsoft Windows updates are installed (or should be installed) on a regular basis. Antivirus and firewall software are updated regularly. On the more malevolent side, new, evolving, and unwanted programs and data such as adware, spyware, viruses, and worms also try to make their way onto your system each day.

All this points directly to the need for regular maintenance and tune ups. Most computers follow Murphy’s Law and will generally fail when it will cause you the most problems. Unlike your auto where when it fails you can always use another car or even a rental, your computer contains your DATA, which cannot be accessed if your system is malfunctioning. Think of it as if your car broke down and you couldn’t leave your house until your car was repaired.

To keep your computer up and running in an efficient manner it is important to follow a proactive tune up service. Some of the common computer issues that can be identified and resolved through a tune up process that can include:

1. Check antivirus, firewall, antispyware, and spam filtering software to ensure that all items are up-to-date, active, and correctly configured.

2. Verify all necessary Windows updates have been downloaded and installed.

3. Verify all Microsoft Office updates have been downloaded and installed.

4. Check Internet Explorer browser settings for optimal use; discuss alternative browsers as needed.

5. Test Internet connection speed/bandwidth performance.

6. Identify any additional security issues or potential problems.

7. Run system maintenance processes such as Disk Cleanup and Defrag.

8. Ensure all data backup processes are being run effectively and completely.

9. Empty the Recycle Bin and clean out all Temp folders.

10. Check hard disk drive to verify enough available data storage space.

So, don’t wait until your “car” breaks down and you are stuck at home. Regular maintenance is very important for keeping your computer running efficiently and securely. Perform the tune up yourself or have a computer technician do one.
